No need to declare Jalan Masjid India disaster zone, says IGP

Razarudin Husain says doing so would require special permission from the National Security Council.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain said those involved in the search and rescue operation at the sinkhole site have performed their duties diligently as if the incident was classified as a disaster.
KOTA BHARU:
There is no need to declare the area around the sinkhole on Jalan Masjid India in Kuala Lumpur as an unsafe or disaster zone, says Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain.

He said the police must obtain special permission from the National Security Council to declare an area unsafe.

“There is no need to declare the Jalan Masjid India area as an unsafe zone because the sinkhole has not been classified as a disaster.

“However, the police, the fire and rescue department, Kuala Lumpur City Hall and the civil defence force have performed their duties diligently as if it was a disaster,” he told reporters at the Kelantan police headquarters today.

Razarudin was asked about the latest developments in the search for Indian national Vijayaletchumy, who fell into the 8m-deep sinkhole last Friday.
