N-Day celebration to feature ‘anti-graft’ dance using brooms, trash bins

PETALING JAYA:
This year’s National Day celebration will feature a first of its kind performance, where brooms and trash bins will be used as instruments in a routine dedicated to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.

The performance, titled “Cuci Rasuah” (Eliminate Corruption), is a tribute to Anwar’s ongoing battle against corruption, Bernama reported.

Rosnan Nordin, the artistic and concept director for the celebration, said the five-minute dance performance will be part of the third segment of the event.

Inspired by the “stompers” concept, it is aligned with this year’s theme, “Malaysia Madani: Jiwa Merdeka”, and will involve 515 dancers from the national cultural and arts department.

Rosnan said the dance will be set to a medley of several patriotic songs, reworked with an upbeat tempo, followed by a song he co-wrote with composer Anuar Abdul Razak titled “Cuci Rasuah”.

“I want to convey Anwar’s fight against corruption to the public,” he said.

“So, through the dance movements, we aim to instil in the hearts of young people a hatred for corruption. We are using only brooms and trash bins.”

Rosnan said the broom symbolises the tool to sweep away corruption, and the trash bin is where corruption should be discarded.

He said the dancers will be dressed in orange – the colour of prison uniforms – to symbolise criminal suspects detained by the authorities.

“This is not a mere performance to entertain the public. We want it to have an impact. Everything has been carefully planned to ensure the message we want to convey is clear,” he said.

Born in Penang, Rosnan said he felt compelled to show support for Anwar’s efforts to eradicate corruption through this performance.

He said the performance will also be his final contribution before retiring next year as deputy director-general of culture and arts at the department.

The 2024 National Day parade will feature 17,262 participants, 67 contingents, 36 marching bands, 534 assets from the army and air force, as well as 100 service animals.
