PETALING JAYA:
Kuala Lumpur has been ranked 93rd in the world’s best science and technology clusters on the World Intellectual Property Organization’s global innovation index (GII), domestic trade and cost of living minister Armizan Mohd Ali said.

“This achievement showcases Malaysia’s ability to compete on an international level in scientific research and technological advancements.

“Kuala Lumpur’s rise in this prestigious list was also achieved through improved geocoding accuracy.

“Key contributors include Mimos Bhd, which was identified as submitting the most patent applications in the world, especially in semiconductor research,” he said, adding that Universiti Malaya was also noted as a significant contributor of published materials, securing Kuala Lumpur’s position as a scientific and technological innovation hub.

Armizan said this achievement opens opportunities to strengthen international cooperation, attract investment, and promote continued growth in the country’s science and technology sectors.

“The domestic trade and cost of living ministry is committed to supporting these efforts to ensure Malaysia’s innovation ecosystem continues to thrive and contribute to the nation’s economic and social progress.

“Through our agency, the Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO), we will continue to strengthen our work with universities, research institutions, and industry players to significantly contribute to the country’s GDP and overall economy,” he said.

Armizan noted that Tokyo-Yokohama was first on the index, followed by Shenzhen-Hong Kong-Guangzhou for their high number of patent cooperation treaty applications.

Alongside Kuala Lumpur, four other clusters made their debut on the index: Nanchang, China (94), Cairo (95), Kunming (98) and Macau-Zhuhai (100).
