PETALING JAYA:
A navy diver died while conducting a salvage operation to recover the wreck of KD Pendekar, which sank after hitting an underwater object off the coast of Johor last Sunday.

In a statement, the navy said the diver, Arman San Hermansa, died while conducting a dive during the salvage operation in the waters off Tanjung Pengelih today.

“The navy will ensure that the deceased’s family is provided with all the necessary assistance and support during this difficult time,” it said.

“The navy extends its deepest sympathy and condolences to his family.”

The diver’s remains are currently at the Sultan Ismail Hospital in Johor Bahru for an autopsy and will be transported to Lahad Datu, Sabah, for burial.

A special investigation board has been set up to determine the cause of the incident.

Bernama reported that acting Kota Tinggi police chief Syamsuri Mohamad confirmed receiving a report about the incident but provided no further details.

None of the 39 crew members who were rescued when the KD Pendekar capsized suffered any injuries in the incident.

The navy previously said a leak was first detected in the ship’s engine room, with water rushing in and spreading uncontrollably throughout the vessel.

The crew’s efforts to stem the leak and stabilise the ship failed.

The KD Pendekar had been in service since 1979.
