PETALING JAYA:
A man in Cheras has become a victim of fake news on a social media platform after he was falsely accused of loitering outside a school to kidnap children, police said.

Cheras police chief SS Ravindar Singh said yesterday, a picture showing a Nissan Almera waiting in front of SMK Seri Permaisuri was circulated on WhatsApp.

The caption that came with the picture alleged that the driver had the intention to kidnap students who were walking or waiting for their parents.

“At 6.22pm yesterday, the police received a report from a foreign man, 46, who was the driver of the Nissan Almera.

“He said that he was in the area waiting for his fiancée, who runs a stall in front of the school, and denied claims that he was there to kidnap students.

“The complainant has met with and explained the matter to the school management,” Ravindar said in a statement.

He urged the public to refrain from making any speculation that could cause confusion and disrupt harmony.
