“We are calling him to provide his statement on Aug 20 to facilitate investigations,” the inspector-general of police, Razarudin Husain, told Bernama.

Razarudin said police have received 29 reports from various parties about Muhyiddin’s speech.

In the speech, video clips of which have been widely shared, Muhyiddin had spoken about the 16th Yang di-Pertuan Agong, Al-Sultan Abdullah Sultan Ahmad Shah, regarding the formation of a government after the 2022 general election.

Police reports were lodged alleging that he had questioned the sovereignty of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

The investigation will be carried out by the classified crimes investigation unit at Bukit Aman.

Yesterday, Umno vice-president Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail added his voice to those calling on the authorities to take action against Muhyiddin, who is Perikatan Nasional chairman and Bersatu president.

Muhyiddin has previously faced police investigations for statements on sensitive issues regarding race, religion and royalty.

In December, police opened an investigation paper on statements he made during the campaign for the Kemaman parliamentary by-election.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ayob Khan Mydin Pitchay said the investigation was being carried out under the Election Offenses Act for promoting feelings of ill-will or hostility.
