Popularly known as “Awie”, he said he would be a representative for everyone and that he would carry his responsibility as an assemblyman “to the best of my abilities”.
“From this moment on, I will represent the people of Nenggiri. I pledge to be a representative for everyone, regardless of their political affiliations, because the polling is over,” he said.
Azmawi reclaimed the Nenggiri seat for Barisan Nasional after defeating Rizwadi Ismail of Perikatan Nasional by a 3,352-vote majority. He secured 9,091 votes compared to Rizwadi’s 5,739 votes.
Last night, Azmawi admitted that he was surprised by the huge majority he obtained, given that BN lost by 810 votes at the state election last August.
“It was beyond my expectations. From the beginning, we were aware that we had lost by 810 votes, this is something I never anticipated,” he said.
He also said he would retain the “BudakAwie” moniker his opponents had coined to mock him, saying the nickname had made him popular.
“I thank those who gave me the nickname as I won the election because of it. I’ll maintain the branding,” he said.
