PETALING JAYA:
Former DAP leader P Ramasamy has questioned the prime minister’s perceived silence over the violence against ethnic and religious minorities in Bangladesh.

Ramasamy asked if Anwar Ibrahim was prepared to condemn the violence, particularly against Hindus, which he said continued unabated.

In a statement, he said global political leaders have urged the interim Bangladesh government under Mohammed Yunus to take measures to end the violence, including burning and looting of homes, properties and temples.

However, Anwar has yet to condemn the violence against the ethnic and religious minorities, the former Penang deputy chief minister said.

“Even if taking up the issue of the human rights in Bangladesh has no local traction, Anwar, who represents the multiracial and multi-religious population of Malaysia, should register his protest with the interim government in Bangladesh,” he said.

Anwar had congratulated Yunus on his appointment on Aug 9.

Ramasamy, who chairs the Indian-based party Urimai, also took a swipe at DAP and PKR leaders for “keeping mum over the violations of human rights” in Bangladesh.

“I suppose they are afraid to openly display their sympathies and concerns of the minorities in Bangladesh,” he said.

Hundreds of Hindus in Bangladesh were reported to have gathered along the Indian border hoping to cross after a student-led uprising toppled prime minister Sheikh Hasina that led to unrest.

Some businesses and homes owned by Hindus were attacked following Hasina’s ouster, and the group is seen by some in Muslim-majority Bangladesh as having been close to her, reports said.
