PETALING JAYA:
Police killed an armed robbery suspect in a shootout with the man near the Kajang Dispersal Link Expressway (SILK) today.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan said officers from Bukit Aman’s criminal investigation department sought to detain a Perodua driver at SILK’s Sungai Balak toll plaza at about 3pm while on patrol.

He said the man refused to stop the vehicle and instead fired gunshots at the policemen.

“The policemen fired back and the suspect was killed. A policeman was also shot in the incident but was safe as he was wearing a bulletproof vest,” Hussein said in a statement.

He said the suspect was a local in his mid-30s with previous convictions for robberies.

Hussein said the man was believed to have been involved in the armed robbery at a goldsmith’s shop at Plaza Metro Kajang two months ago.

The armed robbery at the Kajang shopping mall in June involved four masked men wearing what looked like security guard uniforms and armed with a rifle and two pistols.

After they began smashing the glass showcase with sledgehammers, the man with the rifle fired a shot at the wall. The robbers scooped up some items and escaped through the basement car park.
