GEORGE TOWN:
With Penang’s two main dams running low on water, the state’s water supply company has placed its hopes on cloud seeding operations by the national disaster management agency.

K Pathmanathan, the company’s CEO, said recent rainfall had not been sufficient to replenish the water reserves of the Air Hitam and Teluk Bahang dams, which are at 30% and 26.6% capacity respectively today.

“The water levels at these dams have continued to decrease compared with previous days. We still hope that Nadma will conduct cloud seeding in the catchment areas of these dams,” he said.

Penang chief minister Chow Kon Yeow previously said PBAPP had written to Nadma twice to request cloud seeding but had yet to receive a response.

Pathmanathan said water treatment plants are still operating at an optimum level with water from the two dams.

On Tuesday, Nadma reported that the raw water reserves at the Muda dam in Kedah, Bukit Merah dam in Perak, and Teluk Bahang dam in Penang had fallen to critical levels, with readings of 7.44%, 16.43%, and 28.2%, respectively, as of Aug 5.
