248 evacuated after Alor Gajah hit by floods

The authorities are expecting more residents to be evacuated while the state government will channel RM300 in aid immediately to victims.

PETALING JAYA:
Some 248 people in Masjid Tanah, Alor Gajah, Melaka have been evacuated to five relief centres after the area was hit by floods this morning.

According to Bernama, the authorities are expecting more residents to be evacuated with the Sekolah Kebangsaan Sungai Jernih still registering evacuees as of 7.30pm tonight.

The state government announced that it will channel RM300 in aid immediately to flood victims registered at relief centres.

Chief minister Ab Rauf Yusoh urged the victims to remain calm and patient, saying the Melaka government will seek a solution to overcome the recurrent flooding in Masjid Tanah.

“The entire state government views this matter seriously. We are working on a new method that will solve flooding in Masjid Tanah and Melaka comprehensively,” he was quoted as saying.

Firefighters rescued two Bangladeshi men trapped on the roof of a flooded house in Kampung Padang Kambing in Alor Gajah this afternoon.

The two Bangladeshi men, in their 20s, were trapped on the roof where they had gone to escape the rising floodwaters.
