Bachok police chief Ismail Jamaluddin said the accident happened at 7.20pm while the children were on their way home in Kampung Tok Belian, Bachok,
The children were on a tricycle ridden by a 12-year-old boy. As they were crossing a bridge, the boy lost control of the vehicle, causing the children to fall into the irrigation canal.
“It is believed that the 15-month-old toddler was being held by her eight-year-old brother,” he said in a statement.
Five children were rescued by villagers while the baby was found by firemen at 8.10pm, about four metres from the scene.
He said preliminary investigations revealed that the motorcycle had an expired road tax and was uninsured.
