
Its minister, Tengku Zafrul Aziz, said an official statement will be issued after the meeting to confirm the continuance of the commitments previously made, reported Bernama.
“I want to know what their next plans are. For now, Tesla’s existing service centres will continue to operate as usual,” he said, alluding to the four Tesla experience centres in Malaysia.
Yesterday, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim claimed that Tesla, which was reported to have abandoned plans to build factories in Southeast Asia, had struggled to keep up with Chinese electric vehicle (EV) manufacturers.
The company, co-founded by Elon Musk, has also suffered losses, Anwar said.
He said Tesla had shared this information with the investment, trade and industry ministry.
Tengku Zafrul previously said Tesla had never announced any plans to build a factory in Malaysia.
He said this in response to a report by Thai daily The Nation that Tesla had abandoned its plans to build factories in Southeast Asia, including Malaysia.
Tesla is part of Malaysia’s Battery Electric Vehicle Global Leaders initiative, a government policy aimed at boosting the country’s EV ecosystem.
The company has surpassed the target of installing 50 charging units by setting up 52 ultra-fast chargers with a capacity of more than 180kW each in the Klang Valley, Johor, Melaka, Penang and Pahang.
