PETALING JAYA:
National women’s track cyclist Nurul Izzah Izzati Asri’s Olympic debut ended in the women’s sprint round of 32 repechage in Parish today, despite having set a new national record in the qualifying heats earlier.

She finished 0.059s behind Lauriane Genest of Canada in the repercharge after having qualified for the knockout phase.

The 20-year-old Izzah was unable to overhaul Genest over three laps, with Japan’s Riyu Ohta finishing +0.326s behind Izzah in heat four. Only the winner of each heat qualifies for the round of 16.

In the qualifying round earlier, Izzah had clocked 10.709s to beat the previous national record of 10.903s which she set at the Asian Championships in Nilai last year.

Her time put her 21st overall out of 30 cyclists, earning her a place in the knockout round as one of the best 24 cyclists.

However, she lost to Britain’s Sophie Capewell in the knockout round, after she clocked 10.805s, or 0.081s behind Capewell, placing her in the repechage round.

On Wednesday, she missed out on the quarter-finals of the keirin event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, when she finished third in the repechage round.
