PUTRAJAYA:
A Chinese national has been charged with releasing chemical waste into two rivers last month, causing odour pollution and temporarily halting water treatment works in Kuang, Selangor, last month.

The director-general of environment, Wan Abdul Latiff Wan Jaafar, said the 42-year-old man pleaded not guilty at the Selayang sessions court today.

Wan Abdul Latiff said the accused was not allowed bail.

On July 23, more than 1,000 locations in seven regions of the Klang Valley experienced unscheduled water supply disruptions following the shutdown of four treatment plants as a result of odour pollution in Sungai Kundang and Sungai Sembah, Selangor.

Wan Abdul Latiff said the department would take strict action under the Environmental Quality Act against anyone found to be polluting the environment.

He said amendments to the law last year provided for enhanced penalties of fines between RM5,000 and RM10 million in addition to mandatory imprisonment not exceeding five years.
