PETALING JAYA:
Police have obtained a seven-day remand order for a man suspected of assaulting, strangling and pushing his wife into a ravine at KM31.2 on the Gerik-Jeli East-West Highway in Gerik on July 27.

The remand for the trader, 39, which expires on Monday, was granted by magistrate Savinder Singh, Sinar Harian reported.

The remand request was approved to allow the police to continue their investigation of the suspect for attempted murder under Section 307 of the Penal Code.

It is understood that the suspect was previously detained at the Baling police headquarters in Kedah last Wednesday and remanded for six days for voluntarily causing hurt with a dangerous weapon under Section 324 of the Penal Code, having allegedly injured his elder brother.

The suspect was re-arrested by officers from Gerik after his remand expired on Monday.

On Thursday, police said they had detained a 39-year-old man for allegedly assaulting, strangling and pushing his wife into a ravine following a verbal altercation.

The 32-year-old woman eventually managed to crawl out of the 10m deep ravine. She was found by a member of the public and treated at Taiping Hospital.
