PETALING JAYA:
Incidents of child abuse or child neglect should be reported immediately and not merely recorded and posted on social media, a minister said today.

“People need to know what to do if they see something suspicious. Don’t just record videos for social media; report it to us,” said Nancy Shukri, the minister for women, family and community development.

“Report it immediately to the police or (the ministry’s hotline) Talian Kasih at 15999,” she said while speaking at a child advocacy event in Sibu today, Bernama reported.

She said the ministry’s child protection team should be given an opportunity to better understand the children in their respective areas.

She added that the child advocacy programme was organised with the police and others involved in law enforcement as part of efforts to protect children.

In the programme children were given the opportunity to learn what they should do if they are neglected or abused, she said.

She said her ministry hopes that all parties will work together to find effective solutions to social issues concerning children, and to ensure their safety and protection to curb cases of child abuse and neglect.
