KUALA LUMPUR:
Facebook and Instagram owner Meta has assured the government that live broadcasts of the Palestine freedom rally in Bukit Jalil tomorrow will not be taken down, communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said.

He said the assurance by top Meta officials would ensure no disruptions to live streams of the event by the media and on the social media accounts of political leaders.

Meta also owns the WhatsApp and Messenger social media apps.

Fahmi said he hopes that there will be no recurrence of the removal of a similar rally broadcast last year.

The government has also protested to Meta about the removal of social media posts by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on the assassination of Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh.

Fahmi said Meta officials would provide explanations at a meeting scheduled for Monday. He said Meta had informed the government that special consideration is given to heads of state, government leaders or officials when discussing matters related to Palestine.
