2 cops plead not guilty to extortion

Two policemen denied trying to extort RM300 from a Myanmar national in Kajang last week.
KAJANG:
Two policemen pleaded not guilty in the magistrates’ court here today to extorting RM300 from a Myanmar man five days ago.

Nik Ridzuan Nik Man, 39, and Najmi Khodri, 27, were jointly charged with extorting Wai Lin Phyo, 29, by threatening to arrest him, prompting the victim to hand over RM300.

The offence was allegedly committed along the roadside at Jalan Taming Sari 1, Balakong, here at 11.30am on July 28.

The charge, framed under Section 384 of the Penal Code and read together with Section 34 of the same law, provides for imprisonment for up to 10 years, a fine or whipping, or any two of the punishments upon conviction.

The court set bail at RM4,000 with one surety for each defendant and set Sept 3 for next mention of the case.

Deputy public prosecutor Nurul Husna Amran appeared for the prosecution while lawyers Wafiq Hadie and Fikah Sanusi represented Nik Ridzuan and Najmi respectively.
