PETALING JAYA:
National women’s doubles shuttlers Pearly Tan-M Thinaah stormed into the quarter-finals of the 2024 Paris Olympics badminton competition with a straight-set victory over Indonesia’s Apriyani Rahayu-Siti Fadia Silva Ramadhanti in their final group match today.

The Malaysian pair, ranked 13th in the world, put on a brilliant display to win their Group A match 21-18, 21-9 in 45 minutes at the Porte De La Chapelle Arena in Paris.

This was the duo’s second win in the tournament, following an energy-sapping 18-21, 21-15, 21-16 victory over Japan’s former two-time world champions Mayu Matsumoto-Wakana Nagahara on Sunday.

The duo have now beaten Apriyani-Siti Fadia four times in seven meetings.

They are the second Malaysian women’s doubles pair to enter the quarter-finals of the Olympics after Woon Khe Wei and Vivian Hoo at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro edition.

Earlier, China’s World No. 1 pair Chen Qing Chen-Jia Yi Fan secured a 21-16, 21-15 victory over Matsumoto-Nagahara in their final match to top Group A.

Pearly-Thinaah lost narrowly to the top seeds 17-21, 20-22 in the opening match of Group A last week, but fought their way back into contention after their superb win against the Japanese pair before sealing their place in the last eight today.
