PAS leader warns of split with Gerakan over Chinese schools stance

PAS information chief Ahmad Fadhli Shaari says it is possible the two parties might not be able to form a political alliance for the next general election.

Pasir Mas MP Ahmad Fadhli Shaari said Gerakan’s position on the issue of alcohol companies’ participation in school fundraisers is very disappointing.
PETALING JAYA:
PAS might not be able to work with Gerakan in the next general election if the latter maintains its position on alcohol companies and Chinese schools, a PAS MP said.

“Gerakan’s official stance on the issue of donations to schools from alcohol proceeds is very disappointing.

“If this is what Gerakan consistently highlights, it is not impossible that we will not be able to be in a political alliance in the next general election,” Ahmad Fadhli Shaari, the MP for Pasir Mas, said on Facebook today.

Fadhli, the PAS information chief and former Perikatan Nasional youth chief, was responding to a statement from Gerakan president Dominic Lau yesterday.

Lau said the education ministry should not restrict fundraising activities by certain companies in schools if the government does not allocate sufficient funds to all streams of schools.

He said the government should understand and not hinder the long-standing tradition of fundraising activities at Chinese schools.

“With limited government assistance, they can only rely on fundraising activities such as charity sales, charity dinners, concerts and performances to secure funding,” he said.

Lau said Tiger Beer only sponsors performances. It does not sell beer at the events nor does it directly provide funds to the schools.
