“The search for justice for Beng Hock should not end after we meet with Anwar,” she said during the commemoration of Beng Hock’s 15th death anniversary at Nirvana Memorial Garden today.
“The meeting is merely to achieve justice and for us to know if the government is sincere, courageous and has the political will.
“We hope this meeting will spur the government to take action against the alleged murderers. Remove them from their duties and investigate them under Section 302 of the Penal Code.”
Lee Lan also called on DAP to unite and pressure its Pakatan Harapan allies to reopen the investigation into Beng Hock’s death under Section 302, which deals with murder.
“We hope that DAP will use its strength of having 40 seats in the Dewan Rakyat to request the government to reopen the investigation,” she said.
Beng Hock’s case has recently gained renewed attention after Anwar promised to meet with the family on Aug 1 to review a memorandum addressed to the government.
The memorandum includes amendments to Section 30 of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Act to limit interrogation time as well as the enactment of an anti-torture law.
In 2009, Beng Hock, the former aide to then Selangor executive councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam in Shah Alam, hours after arriving for questioning on the 14th floor of the Selangor MACC headquarters.
A coroner’s inquest in 2011 delivered an open verdict and his family subsequently filed an appeal. Three years later, the Court of Appeal set aside the open verdict and ruled that Beng Hock’s death was caused by multiple injuries as a result of unlawful acts by unknown persons, including MACC officers.
Federal Territory DAP chairman Tan Kok Wai, who attended the event today, urged Anwar to publicly acknowledge the injustice of Beng Hock’s death and to express support for the family.
Tan, who is also the Cheras MP, said the 2014 appellate court ruling proved that Beng Hock was “innocently killed” and that justice can only be served by prosecuting the alleged culprits
He said the then-ruling government should have conducted a judicial review based on the court’s ruling.
“Anwar should (now) affirm the government’s commitment to judicial fairness and intolerance towards abuse of power, and pledge to conduct a comprehensive review of Beng Hock’s case,” he said.
Deputy communications minister Teo Nie Ching and Selangor state assembly Speaker Lau Weng San were among the other DAP leaders who were present today.
