PUTRAJAYA:
Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil today announced a Rahmah prepaid internet package for students at public universities and public training institutes.

The special package aims to ease the financial burden on new and current students and will be available from Aug 16.

Priced at RM30, the package offers a minimum of 30GB of data with a validity period of 180 days.

“The package will be available through five telecommunication providers: CelcomDigi, Maxis, U Mobile, TM Tech and YTL Communications (YES),” Fahmi said in his opening speech at the Institute of Public Relations Malaysia conference on ethical and responsible communication here.

Fahmi said the package was an effort between the communications ministry and telecommunications companies to tackle cost-of-living challenges, particularly by supporting students in their educational pursuits.

He also said that the government was not funding the scheme, as telecommunications companies had voluntarily reduced their charges.

While the initiative currently targets students from public universities and public training institutes, Fahmi said discussions with telecommunications companies were underway to expand its availability.

“We want students to fully benefit from this Rahmah package,” he said.

Fahmi added that students from public universities and training institutes can register for the scheme by presenting their student cards to their chosen telecommunications provider.
