Speed limit near schools to be reduced to 30km/h

Local authorities and schools will work together to install speed humps in school zones.

The decision was made based on an average of 67 deaths recorded annually in school zones.
KUALA LUMPUR:
The speed limit in school zones will be reduced to 30km/h from the previous 40km/h to better protect students, says deputy prime minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi.

Zahid, who chairs a Cabinet committee on road congestion and safety, said the decision was made based on an average of 67 deaths recorded annually in these zones.

It was previously reported that the mandatory speed limit for school zones is 30km/h. However, it is understood that this was just a local council guideline.

“The local authorities and schools must work together to install speed humps,” he said at a press conference here.

Zahid said the installation of the humps would not involve extra funding from any ministry.

He said a task force would be formed to identify the starting and ending points for this speed limit, and to gazette and implement the law.

Separately, Zahid said Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) needed a total of 20,000 CCTVs to help reduce the crime rate in the city.

Currently, it has installed 5,000 CCTVs.

He said CCTV systems with facial recognition could help reduce crime and boost the police’s presence.

Meanwhile, transport minister Loke Siew Fook encouraged DBKL to collaborate with the private sector to improve on or build new bus stands and bus stops to increase the use of public transport.

“There are a lot of public bus stands that are not acceptable. We want to upgrade them and ask for allocations for that purpose, tying with the private sector.

“So we encourage the local council to collaborate with the private sector. We can give them certain rights to advertise their companies. Once we have more bus stands and bus stops, the number of people using buses will increase,” he said.
