“We need to send a clear signal that we are serious about solving cyberbullying and ensuring all stakeholders play a role in this goal,” he said in a statement.
He said while several laws are already in place to safeguard internet users, his ministry is willing to work with other relevant ministries to strengthen the existing laws or introduce new laws to tackle cyberbullying.
“Should there be any misuse of cyberspace, immediate action can be taken to prevent it from happening,” said Gobind in a statement.
“We need to ensure that internet platforms are safe not only from the aspects of cybersecurity and personal data protection but also to make sure it’s not misused by any party,” he said.
He did not elaborate on situations that can be deemed as misuse of the internet and the actions to be taken if abuse-related actions are found.
Gobind said he had discussed the need to resolve the rising cases of cyberbullying with communications minister Fahmi Fadzil and law and institutional reform minister Azalina Othman Said in a recent Cabinet meeting.
Yesterday, Fahmi said Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim was disappointed with the death of TikTok influencer A Rajeswary (Esha) who had allegedly ended her own life due to cyberbullying, Bernama reported.
Police have since arrested a 44-year-old male lorry driver and a 35-year old woman for alleged criminal intimidation and other offences relating to the harassment of the influencer.
A day before her death, Esha, who was also a Hindu rights activist, filed a police report against two people for allegedly harassing her on TikTok.
