2 journalists targeted by cyberbully linked to content creator Esha’s case

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil says the cyberbully took photos of the journalists' houses and family members.

Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil said he had also ordered the MCMC to take action against cyberbullying and offensive language on TikTok Live and Facebook.
SUBANG JAYA:
Two journalists have also become victims of the same cyberbully linked to the death of 29-year-old TikTok content creator Rajeswary Appahu, better known as Esha, says communications minister Fahmi Fadzil.

Fahmi said the reporters contacted him after the incident involving Esha to inform him that the cyberbully was using a fake account.

“They are scared because the cyberbully went as far as taking photos of their houses and family members. This is a criminal threat, with the perpetrators hiding behind fake accounts,” he told a press conference after launching the Artificial Intelligence Experience Centre at CelcomDigi Hub.

“Let me say that those who hide behind fake accounts never have good intentions, and we must do something to correct this.”

Fahmi said he had ordered the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) to take action on comments containing elements of cyberbullying and offensive language on social media.

“I have asked MCMC to act against several individuals who posted comments on TikTok Live and Facebook that could be interpreted as cyberbullying, offensive and unlawful comments,” he said.

“We need to draw the line. People can’t simply make comments without considering the implications. We want to ensure the internet is safe for children and families.”

Earlier today, Sentul police chief Sukarno Zahari said statements had been recorded from nine people in connection with Esha’s case.

It was reported yesterday that a 35-year-old woman had been arrested to assist in the investigation. She will be remanded until tomorrow.

The case is being investigated under Section 506 of the Penal Code, Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, and Section 14 of the Minor Offences Act 1955.

A day before her death last week, Esha, who was also a Hindu rights activist, filed a police report against two people for allegedly harassing her on TikTok.
