SHAH ALAM:
Ten crew members, including the captain of cargo ship MV KUMJIN, survived after the vessel sank 2.1 nautical miles west of Tanjung Rhu, Sepang, near here this morning.

Selangor Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) director Abdul Muhaimin Salleh said MMEA received information on the incident through a call stating that a cargo ship had sprung a severe leak at the front of the ballast tank.

Muhaimin said the 3.35am incident saw 10 crew members including the ship’s captain trying to reach the lifeboat due to the major leak.

“MMEA mobilised its Perkasa 36 boat to the location despite the bad weather,” he said.

Muhaimin said MMEA members helped transfer the crew members onto the Perkasa 36 boat before taking them to the Pulau Indah marine police base jetty for further action and health checks.

He said the captain of the ship, a 53-year-old Indonesian citizen, and the other crew members who are Indonesian and Myanmar citizens aged 19 to 50, were carrying valid identity documents and permits.
