PETALING JAYA:
A man was burnt to death after he crashed his car into a ditch while trying to escape from a pursuing patrol car in Muar, Johor, today.

Two policemen were also seriously injured after their patrol car crashed into the same ditch in the 4am incident near Jalan Benteng in Parit Kongsi 4, Harian Metro reported.

They are receiving treatment at Sultanah Fatimah Specialist Hospital in Muar.

Muar police chief Raiz Mukhliz Azman Aziz said the incident occurred when the suspect tried to evade a police inspection.

He said that before the incident, the two policemen, aged 40 and 41, were conducting a routine patrol and stopped the suspect at Parit Jawa for an inspection.

“However, the suspect fled in his car, accelerating towards Parit Jamil. The officers warned him to stop, but he sped away.

“During the pursuit, both cars crashed into the same ditch.

“The suspect’s car caught fire, causing him to burn to death. The two policemen were seriously injured,” he said in a statement.

The body was taken to the same hospital for autopsy and DNA identification.

Raiz Mukhliz said the case is being investigated under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving, and Section 186 of the Penal Code for obstructing public servants from performing their duties.
