SHAH ALAM:
The Selangor government has handed over to Selangor FC a total of RM76,490 collected through a fundraising campaign to help the team pay the fine imposed by the Malaysian Football League (MFL).

Selangor menteri besar Amirudin Shari said the amount collected showed the strong support of the people for Selangor FC.

“The sum will be handed over to Selangor FC in aid of their pursuit of justice to the highest level,” he said during the presentation ceremony at the state secretariat building here.

Amirudin presented the contribution to Selangor FC CEO Johan Kamal Hamidon.

“Many have come forward to contribute through various social media platforms,” said Johan, who was moved by the involvement of the state government and the Selangor sports committee.

Last month, MFL imposed a RM100,000 fine and docked three points from Selangor FC after they withdrew from the Charity Shield match against Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT).

The decision to withdraw from the season-opener was made in view of several incidents involving Malaysian footballers, including the acid attack on Selangor FC forward Faisal Halim on May 5.

Selangor ruler, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah, voiced anger and disappointment at MFL for imposing such “excessive and unreasonable” penalties on Selangor FC.

He also lambasted Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) president Hamidin Amin for not speaking out on behalf of Selangor FC, despite previously serving as the state football association’s secretary-general.

MFL subsequently reduced the fine imposed on Selangor FC to RM60,000. It also cancelled the three-point deduction but warned that repeated offences could result in stricter penalties.
