PUTRAJAYA:
The communications ministry is looking into ways, including through EPF, to increase benefits for members of the media when they retire, minister Fahmi Fadzil said.

He added that this followed the ministry’s success in managing the Social Security Organisation (Socso) contributions for media professionals.

“I have conveyed this matter to several agencies in the ministry, for us to look into and determine the best mechanism for implementation,” he said.

Fahmi said discussions with EPF would take some time.

He said since July 1, almost 600 part-time stringers have benefitted from Socso contributions.

He said that with this social protection, members of the press could work without worry.

On May 27, Fahmi announced that the ministry would cover Socso contributions for 565 part-time media professionals for a year.

These contributions will be channelled through Bernama.
