JOHOR BAHRU:
A Batu Pahat secondary school canteen was ordered to close for 14 days until July 11 after 90 students and nine staff members suffered food poisoning.

State executive councillor Ling Tian Soon said fried chicken served at the canteen last Thursday is believed to have been the cause.

He said an inspection of the canteen was conducted and food samples were sent to the laboratory for testing, with results expected in two to three days’ time.

“The investigation is ongoing and, during the closure, the canteen operator must clean up the premises” he told reporters after a diabetes screening campaign at the Regency Medical Centre here today.

Oil spill cleanup done

Ling said the cleanup of a marine fuel oil spill in Pengerang waters had been completed. About 43 tonnes of oil waste were collected in the operation from Sungai Rengit to Teluk Ramunia, bordering Singapore.

However, new pollution was detected on Pulau Che Kamat in Sungai Rengit, where cleanup will begin tomorrow.

He said the cleanup costs will be covered by the insurance company of the ship involved. Discussions on the total compensation are under way with the affected parties, including fishermen.

On June 14, a Vox Maxima ship from the Netherlands collided with the oil tanker Marine Honor from Singapore, resulting in approximately 400 tonnes of oil spilling into Singapore and Malaysian waters.
