Gua Musang PAS chief Azman Ahmad said Nenggiri assemblyman Azizi Abu Naim throwing support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration had shaken voter confidence.
The Nenggiri seat was declared vacant by the state assembly speaker after he had received a notice from Bersatu that Azizi had ceased to be a member of the party.
On Wednesday, Azizi, who is also the Gua Musang MP, said he expected Dewan Rakyat Speaker Johari Abdul to decide on his status as well as that of five other former Bersatu MPs by next week.
Azizi said they had been asked by Johari to respond to his queries on the issue.
“The voters feel uncertain. They trust PAS representatives more than Bersatu’s after several of their representatives switched their allegiance,” Azman told FMT.
He stressed, however, that not all of Bersatu’s representatives are frogs, saying that “many are good”.
Azman said they will leave the matter to PAS’s leadership and that they will not boycott the by-election if Bersatu defends the seat.
Previously, Muhyiddin Yassin said a Bersatu candidate will represent Perikatan Nasional for the Nenggiri seat on Aug 17.
He said PN’s top leadership agreed to this since the seat was won by Bersatu at last year’s state elections.
Yesterday, Harakahdaily quoted Gua Musang PAS youth chief Habidin Hanipa as saying the party should be given the chance to contest the Nenggiri seat to avoid a repeat of past incidents.
He also said 90% of the election machinery in the constituency belonged to PAS.
