Malaysia’s total LNG export in 2023 was 26.75 million tonnes, constituting about 7% of the total LNG traded globally, according to the International Gas Union’s annual world LNG report released today.
“Globally, Malaysia is highlighted as having one of the largest operational liquefaction capacities at 32 million tonnes per annum among 21 markets operating LNG export facilities,” the report said.
Asia-Pacific was the highest exporting region, with a total of 134.80 million tonnes per annum, and was also the largest importing region with 155.32 million tonnes in LNG, while inter-regional trade was at 95 million tonnes in 2023, it added.
Malaysia’s Kasawari gas field, with 3.7 million tonnes per annum in carbon dioxide capacity, is listed as one of the LNG-linked carbon capture and storage projects.
International Gas Union president Li Yalan said LNG would be critical to providing greater resiliency for rapidly changing energy systems around the world, and will have an essential role in mitigating the inherent risk of uncertainty.
Malaysian Gas Association president Abdul Aziz Othman said LGN has a crucial role in Malaysia’s energy transition roadmap, which anticipates gas demand to increase from 43% to 56% by 2050.
