Director Khairi Anwar Jailani and producer Tan Meng Kheng were charged with “intentionally wounding the religious feelings of others” through the production of the movie.

If convicted, they face imprisonment of up to one year, a fine, or both.

They had asked for the High Court to determine whether the phrase “wounding religious feeling” in Section 298 of the Penal Code was vague and whether their charge under the provision violated their freedom of speech and expression.

Magistrate Noorelynna Hanim Abd Halim said that their application had merit and allowed them to refer their questions to the High Court.

She also suspended all proceedings before her pending the High Court’s disposal of the matter.

Noorelynna fixed Sept 20 for case management.

Khairi and Tan were represented by lawyer Zaid Malek, while deputy public prosecutor Abdul Malik Ayob appeared for the prosecution.
