Zahari Reba and Hasni Zakaria, both 56, were seen leaving the district police headquarters here at 2.30pm.
Their lawyer, Fahmi Moin, said the police only wanted to record the couple’s statements.
“Both of them are required to report to the police station once a month. I’m sure they will abide by this order and cooperate with the authorities to find Zayn’s murderer,” he told reporters.
Zahari, who appeared calm, thanked the police for their professionalism and for treating them well while they were under custody.
“I haven’t had enough sleep since yesterday, I just want to rest and see my son and daughter-in-law at home,” he said.
Earlier this morning, Zayn’s parents, Zaim Ikhwan Zahari and Ismanira Abdul Manaf, claimed trial to a charge of neglecting the boy at the Petaling Jaya sessions court.
The charge was framed under Section 31(1)(a) of the Child Act 2001. If convicted, the duo could each face a fine of up to RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding 20 years, or both.
Zayn was reported missing in Damansara Damai on Dec 5 last year. He was found dead the next day near a stream located 200m from his home.
The post-mortem revealed multiple injuries, including defensive wounds, while the cause of death was believed to be strangulation.
