PETALING JAYA:
Bersatu’s Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal has advised one of the party’s MPs who has since declared support for Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s government to read up on the anti-hopping law.

The party’s youth chief suggested Syed Abu Hussin Hafiz Syed Abdul Fasal familiarise himself with the law after the Bukit Gantang MP attempted to clarify his status as a parliamentarian and Bersatu member in a press release.

Last night, Bersatu said it had terminated the membership of six of its MPs, including Syed Hussin, who declared their support for Anwar’s government.

Earlier this evening, Syed Hussin insisted he remained an MP, arguing that Bersatu’s termination of his membership amounted to “constructive dismissal”.

Bersatu, however, contended that the memberships of elected representatives like Syed Hussin had been terminated of their own accord as they had gone against party directives.

The party insisted that they must resign from their elected posts as they had ceased to be party members.

In a statement tonight, Wan Fayhsal said he was left “impressed” by the effort put in by Syed Hussin to draft a statement, in an attempt to defend his position.

“But it is a waste of time as it (Syed Hussin’s argument) can be debunked by an infographic prepared by the Prime Minister’s Department’s legal affairs division.

“He should refer to it or refer to the Attorney-General’s Chambers to get a more informed view.”

Apart from Syed Hussin, the remaining five MPs who have backed Anwar’s administration are Azizi Abu Naim (Gua Musang), Dr Zulkafperi Hanapi (Tanjong Karang), Zahari Kechik (Jeli), Iskandar Dzulkarnain Abdul Khalid (Kuala Kangsar) and Suhaili Abdul Rahman (Labuan).

Party secretary-general Hamzah Zainudin said the party delivered notices of immediate termination to the six MPs for not complying with its recently amended constitution.
