PETALING JAYA:
Police have arrested the grandparents of murdered autistic six-year-old Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin.

Selangor police chief Hussein Omar Khan told FMT the couple was arrested at 2.30pm to assist in investigations into the boy’s murder.

Zayn’s parents are currently under remand as they assist police in the murder inquiry, conducted under Section 302 of the Penal Code. Their remand, which was extended on June 7, will end tomorrow.

The decision on whether they will be charged or released is expected to be determined tomorrow.

Earlier today, police brought Zayn’s mother, Ismanira Abdul Manaf, to the Petaling Jaya magistrates’ court purportedly to record a “confession” under Section 26(1) of the Evidence Act 1950.

The provision states that no confession made by anyone while under police custody shall be proved as against that person unless it is made in the presence of a sessions court judge or magistrate.

However, her lawyer said Ismanira didn’t make a confession.

“Instead, she provided a statement to the magistrate,” Mahmud Jumaat told a press conference after proceedings today.

Zayn was reported missing in Damansara Damai on Dec 5 last year. He was found dead the next day about 200m from his apartment block.

The post-mortem revealed multiple injuries, including defensive wounds, while the cause of death was believed to be strangulation.
