KUALA LUMPUR:
Two lawyers and an activist have called for preacher Firdaus Wong to be investigated for various offences after a video featuring him dispensing advice on converting minors went viral.

They are also calling for police reports to be lodged against Firdaus as well as for his arrest.

Lawyer Rajesh Nagarajan said Firdaus should be investigated for wounding religious feelings and called on affected parents to lodge police reports.

Rajesh said that from a legal perspective, Firdaus had “somewhat confessed” to converting minors when he claimed he was used to handling such cases.

“That’s a confession he has done it (converting minors) before. You don’t go around converting other people’s children,” he told a press conference.

Sachpreetraj Singh Sohanpal, also a lawyer, questioned the government’s perceived silence over the matter and said it reeked of double standards.

Activist Arun Doraisamy (holding up report) said a police report on preacher Firdaus Wong’s video had been lodged yesterday.

“The Madani government has always warned about touching on topics revolving around the 3Rs,” he said, referring to issues related to race, religion and royalty.

“But it has yet to make any statement on this matter.”

S Shashi Kumar, president of the Global Human Rights Federation, questioned the government’s lack of response.

“It has been 11 days since the issue (was first highlighted) and (there have been) numerous press statements. Yet, till today, the education ministry, the police and the Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) have not stepped in,” he said.

‘Ban Firdaus from public schools’

Activist Arun Doraisamy said the education ministry should ban Firdaus from public schools.

“This is so that non-Muslim parents can be provided some form of comfort in knowing that characters (such as Firdaus) are not in contact with their children,” he said.

He added that the police and the AGC must take action against the preacher.

“The government must also come out with an official statement denouncing such acts (to covertly convert minors) that abuse our students,” he said.

Meanwhile, lawyer-activist Siti Kasim said Firdaus had brought shame to the Muslim community, highlighting that no action had been taken against the preacher despite the “thousands” of police reports filed against him.

“Why do you think he boldly posted the video? It’s because he thinks he can get away with it as our authorities have failed to do anything,” she said.

She added that she hoped that more people, especially non-Muslim parents, would come forward to lodge reports against Firdaus, going on to say that he is causing disharmony among Malaysians.
