PETALING JAYA:
A Tenaga Nasional substation next to the Jesus Caritas Catholic Church in Kepong caught fire this evening.

The church was not affected and there were no casualties, a fire and rescue department spokesman told FMT. A large group of people were reported to be attending a church event at the time.

The department said an emergency call about the fire was received at 7.14pm. Senior operations commander Azhar Harun said the fire was spreading rapidly when the firemen arrived, but they were unable to directly extinguish it because of the live electrical currents.

The fire was successfully extinguished at 9:21pm using two foam tanks. The cause of the fire is being investigated.

In a statement, TNB said the substation supplied power to the church and other parts of the Jalan Kepong Baru area. Power supply was being restored in phases to affected areas, with power expected to be fully restored at 12am.

In a statement to its parishioners, the church said it had suspended all daily masses until further notice.

“All kindergarten classes will be suspended on Monday and only small and medium-sized meetings will be allowed to take place in the church for the time being,” it added.
