KUANTAN:
Birders from more than 10 countries are competing over two days to see who can spot the largest number of bird species in the Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race 2024.

Taking part are a total of 109 teams, the largest number in the event’s history, with 51 teams from countries such as the Philippines, Vietnam, Cambodia, Singapore, Indonesia, India and Britain.

Tourism Pahang general manager Kamaruddin Ibrahim said 58 local or student teams are taking part in the race, in which the teams would seek out, identify and record as many bird species as possible.

Fraser’s Hill was chosen as the venue as it was one of the best areas to spot birds, with over 250 species previously being recorded in the highland area.

Kamaruddin said there were also migratory birds here that flew from northern Siberia from October to April, during the northern hemisphere winter.

“Usually the migratory birds will stop around Fraser’s Hill for several months before moving southwards towards Australia and New Zealand,” Kamaruddin said.

The event is organised with the cooperation of the Malaysian Nature Society and Bird Life International as the management partner.
