PETALING JAYA:
A civil servant was among three men remanded for five days today over RM1.18 million in alleged bribes paid to skip procedures required to register the marriage of a Malaysian couple who had married in Thailand.

Bernama quoted a Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) source as saying the remand order was issued by magistrate Ana Rozana Nor at the Kangar magistrates’ court today.

The source said the first suspect, in his 40s, worked as a registrar of marriages and was arrested between 4pm and 7pm yesterday at his office.

The source said the suspect was believed to have received more than RM1.18 million in bribes from the owner of a company to enable a couple who married in Thailand to register their marriage at the Islamic religious affairs department in Perlis without going through the prescribed procedures.

Meanwhile, a company owner, in his 20s, and his father, in his 50s, were arrested at around 6pm yesterday when they appeared at the MACC office to have their statements recorded.

“This first suspect is believed to have been dealing with the company owner through the father, who had acted as a middleman.

“The suspect is believed to have committed the act from 2022 to 2023, and received bribes of more than RM1.18 million,” the source said.

Meanwhile, Perlis MACC director Nor Adha Ab Gani confirmed the arrest and said the case is being investigated under Section 17(a) of the MACC Act 2009.
