PETALING JAYA:
Former deputy public prosecutor Fahmi Abd Moin will now represent the parents of autistic six-year-old Zayn Rayyan Abdul Matiin, who were arrested by police last Friday to assist in an investigation.

Fahmi confirmed to Berita Harian that he had been appointed by the couple’s family.

“Insya-Allah, I will be present (at the proceedings in court this Friday),” he was quoted as saying.

Zayn’s grandfather, Zahari Mohd Reba, also confirmed Fahmi’s appointment as the couple’s new lawyer.

Yesterday, it was reported that Mahmud Jumaat had withdrawn from representing Zayn’s parents.

Mahmud, who was appointed by the family after the couple was arrested in Puncak Alam last Friday, said he could no longer represent them as he needed to focus on his other cases.

Zayn’s parents were remanded until June 7 to assist in an investigation under Section 302 of the Penal Code.

Zayn was reported missing on Dec 5 last year. He was found dead about 200m from his home in Damansara Damai the next day.

The autopsy results reportedly revealed signs of self-defence wounds, while the cause of death was injuries to the neck believed to be caused by strangulation.
