PETALING JAYA:
The heavy rain this evening wreaked havoc in Kuala Lumpur as the bad weather led to fallen trees blocking off several roads in the city.

According to Astro Radio Traffic, a large tree has fallen at Jalan Bukit Pantai, blocking off all three lanes heading towards the Air Selangor building.

Not too far away, a tree also fell at Jalan Pantai Permai near Pantai Hill Park in Pantai Dalam, with both lanes headed towards Kerinchi blocked by the tree.

No vehicles appear to have been crushed by any of the trees, though road users are advised to seek alternative routes to their destination.

Social media user Myra posted a photo of an uprooted tree which crushed a car at Universiti Malaya.

Social media users also reported a fallen tree in Bangsar blocking off Jalan Ara near the Bangsar Village 1 shopping mall.

The Malaysian Highway Authority said a tree also fell at Km 7.6 on the northbound Sprint Highway from Kerinchi towards Damansara.

“The left and middle lanes are blocked causing a 2km jam. Road users are advised to use alternative routes,” it said in a post on X at about 6.30pm.

The heavy rain and strong winds also affected the Universiti Malaya (UM) campus, with several large trees uprooted and falling on vehicles, social media users reported.

The Kuala Lumpur fire and rescue department said it was notified of a fallen tree which crashed into an electric pole and blocked a main road at UM’s first residential college.

Several fallen trees at Jalan Klang Lama damaged four lorries; at Taman Tun Dr Ismail, two fallen trees blocked off Jalan Leong Yew Koh and the entrance to Trellises Apartment.

No one was injured and work to clear the roads is under way, the department said.
