Malaysia surprises Thais to claim Sepak Takraw World Cup doubles crown

It is the national team's first gold medal in the Sepak Takraw World Cup since its introduction in 2011.

PETALING JAYA:
Aidil Aiman Azwawi and Noraizat Nordin of Malaysia beat favourites Thailand to win the doubles title at the Sepak Takraw World Cup tonight.

Aidil and Noraizat defeated Thailand’s Seksan Tubtong-Kittiphum Sareebut 17-16, 15-13 in the final at the Titiwangsa Stadium in Kuala Lumpur.

Berita Harian reported that this is the national sepak takraw team’s first gold medal in the World Cup since its introduction in 2011.

It is also Malaysia’s maiden victory over Thailand in the doubles event.

Malaysia got off to an early lead in the opening game and held a six-point advantage before the visitors caught up.

However, the national pair managed to overcome the pressure and stay focused to win 17-16.

The second game unfolded with both teams trading points before Malaysia concluded the match with a historic 15-13 win.
