PETALING JAYA:
The acid attack on national footballer Faisal Halim continues to gain international attention, with German giants Borussia Dortmund today expressing solidarity with the Selangor FC winger.

In a post on its Facebook page, Dortmund recounted how the Harimau Malaya star scored the goal of the tournament in the recent AFC Asian Cup against South Korea.

The club also noted that Faisal’s 13 goals and nine assists in last season’s Malaysia Super League helped Selangor FC to a second-place finish.

“Faisal was attacked and was left in a critical condition in the intensive care unit. We want to shed light on the violence in football. Stop the violence. We stand with Faisal Halim,” the club said.

The eight-time Bundesliga champions will meet Spanish giants Real Madrid in this season’s European Champions League final at Wembley Stadium on June 1.

Earlier this month, Manchester United players wished Faisal a speedy recovery after the May 5 acid attack left him with fourth-degree burns.

In a video on Stadium Arena’s Instagram page, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana and midfielder Alejandro Garnacho told the Harimau Malaya star to “stay strong” and “keep fighting”.

The 26-year-old Faisal is expected to be out of action for five to six months, and will miss two national team matches in the second round of the 2026 World Cup/2027 Asian Cup qualifiers against Kyrgyzstan and Taiwan next month.

On May 2, Terengganu FC winger Akhyar Rashid was attacked by two robbers after returning home from training, while former national team and Johor Darul Takzim (JDT) skipper Safiq Rahim had his car’s rear windscreen smashed on May 7.

All three incidents happened in the space of one week.

Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain has called for footballers who fear for their safety to lodge police reports, while the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM) said players should consider hiring bodyguards.
