PETALING JAYA:
Three Indonesian fishermen who were rescued after their boat was smashed by a cargo ship during a thunderstorm have returned home.

The Perak Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) said another man, who is receiving treatment at Seri Manjung Hospital, will return home later, Bernama reported.

The trio were handed over to a representative from the Indonesian consulate in Lumut yesterday.

Their boat collided with a cargo ship 90.6 nautical miles southwest of Penang on Thursday.

Perak maritime director Shukri Khotob said the four fishermen – Muhamad Solihin, 53, Dady Shahputra, 39, Asri, 44, and Jampur, 53 – were from Medan.

Jampur is being treated for injuries to his hand, ribs and right leg.

Shukri said the repatriation was due to Malaysian and Indonesian maritime forces enjoying cordial ties.

Another crew member, Abdul Malek, 56, who was previously believed to have gone missing in the incident, was found healthy and safe by local fishermen in Indonesian waters.

The four Indonesian fishermen were found clinging to pieces of wood and fish barrels by another cargo ship and handed over to MMEA.
