PETALING JAYA:
Perikatan Nasional Youth has demanded that the government explain why a company with alleged links to Israel has been allowed to own shares in Malaysia Airports Holdings Bhd (MAHB).

The wing’s chief, Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden, said they were alarmed over recent news reports revealing that Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), a subsidiary of American company BlackRock, will hold shares in MAHB.

In a statement, he said BlackRock owns a stake in companies that manufacture arms which enable Israel to continue its genocide against the Palestinian people.

“No pro-Israel company should be allowed to invest in Malaysia, more so in airports,” he said.

Afnan’s demand follows confirmation by Khazanah Nasional Bhd and EPF on Wednesday that they plan to take over MAHB through a consortium and privatise the airport operator.

Khazanah will be increasing its ownership in MAHB from 33.2% to 40%, and EPF from 7.9% to 30%. Collectively, Malaysian investors would own 70% of MAHB.

Abu Dhabi Investment Authority (AIDA) and GIP will hold the remaining 30%.

In January, BlackRock, one of the world’s largest asset management companies holding shares in several defence industry enterprises, agreed to acquire GIP.

Afnan questioned why a company with a “dubious” track record in managing other airports was allowed to hold shares in MAHB.

“PN Youth is dismayed by the current situation and demands an explanation from the relevant parties, especially the government, which has remained silent until now,” he said.

He added that any dealings with Israel must be immediately terminated without compromise as there must be consistent action alongside being vocal on the international stage.

In March, Machang MP Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal alleged in Parliament that Khazanah was selling its stakes in MAHB to GIP, a claim that transport minister Loke Siew Fook denied.

Earlier today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the opposition was merely trying to incite hatred of the government by making such claims.
