KOTA BHARU:
Police have tightened security along the border with Thailand following reports of an explosion and gunfire in the Gualosira area in Pasemas, Sungai Golok, Narathiwat, early this morning, Inspector-General of Police Razarudin Husain says.

“The safety of residents near the border area must be prioritised. The same goes for the safety of our officers and men on duty in the area,” he told Bernama today.

Razarudin said that state police chiefs, especially those from Kelantan, Perlis, Kedah, and Perak, had also been instructed to be on high alert.

Meanwhile, general operations force southeast brigade commander Sheik Azhar Sheik Omar said his team was on standby, carrying out foot and motorcycle patrols along the 16 static posts near the border area.

“The incident occurred on the Thailand side near the Rantau Panjang border area. We have 16 static posts along Sungai Golok, from Pos Ibrahim Pencen to Pos Ular in Pengkalan Kubor, Tumpat,” he said, adding that roadblocks have been in place since 6am, manned by six-man teams.
