KUALA LUMPUR:
The defence ministry is ready to assess the need to review the standard operating procedures (SOPs) for rehearsals following Tuesday’s crash involving two Royal Malaysian Navy (RMN) helicopters in Lumut, Perak, that claimed the lives of 10 personnel.

Minister Khaled Nordin said the decision to review the SOPs would be made after receiving the complete investigation report on the incident.

“We will learn from this and wait for the investigation report. From there, we will take appropriate actions,” he told a press conference after an armed forces Hari Raya Aidilfitri open house event.

Khaled did not discount the possibility that the inquiry board would summon all parties, including the helicopter suppliers, to complete its investigation.

“The committee (inquiry body) has been formed. They will assess and determine who will assist (in the investigation). We need a clear understanding of what happened.

“No aspect will be overlooked or concealed,” he said.

Yesterday, unity government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil said an interim report on the crash would be ready in two weeks, followed by a full report within a month.

In the 9.32am incident on Tuesday, two RMN helicopters collided while conducting a third rehearsal for a fly-past as part of the navy’s 90th anniversary event, initially scheduled for this Saturday.

Post-mortems on the 10 people who were killed in the collision have been completed, with the bodies returned to the families.

Following the incident, the celebration was cancelled and replaced with a prayer session and tahlil recitation.

RM3,000 to help families of victims

Meanwhile, the women, family and community development ministry will donate RM3,000 under the “Skim Pemberian Ehsan Kepada Keluarga Mangsa” to families of the 10 victims, Bernama reported.

Its minister, Nancy Shukri, hoped that the aid, which will be channelled soon, would help to alleviate their burden and ease their grief.

“The ministry is always committed to helping those in need, including the next of kin of the victims, who may now have no one to depend on,” she said.
