The airline said it understood the inconvenience caused to its passengers as the flight cancellations have disrupted their travel plans.
“Affected customers who wish to change their flights or cancel their travel may do so via ‘My Booking’ on our website.
“Alternatively, customers may also reach out to our Live Chat support available on the website or call our Global Contact Centre.
“Passengers are urged to update their contact details via My Booking on Malaysia Airlines’ website to receive updates from time to time via email and SMS,” it said in a statement.
Earlier today, Malaysia Airlines and AirAsia cancelled flights between KLIA and Sabah and Sarawak following the eruption of Mount Ruang in North Sulawesi, Indonesia.
However, low-cost carrier AirAsia later said it has reinstated several flights scheduled to and from East Malaysia today.
In a statement, AirAsia said the 19 reinstated flights were on the Bintulu, Kuching, Sibu, Johor Bahru and Kota Bharu routes.
AirAsia said it had notified all affected guests and those who are travelling to or from the affected destinations are encouraged to check their registered email and mobile phones for cancellation notifications.
Earlier, AirAsia group chief executive officer Bo Lingam said affected AirAsia passengers can reschedule their flights by making a one-time change to any new travel date within 30 days from the original departure date on the same route without additional cost, subject to seat availability.
They can also retain the value of the flight booking in the guest’s Airasia Rewards member account for future travel, to be redeemed within two years from the issuance date.
On Wednesday, multiple eruptions of Mount Ruang prompted the evacuation of at least 800 people. The volcano has been active for several days, spewing lava and ash clouds.
Authorities have raised the alert level to the second highest.
They say the ash clouds, up to 16km high, can damage aircraft engines and critical components, interfere with the avionics and reduce visibility.
